In the past all residential landscape design as well as community design attempted to shed water off the properties to swales and storm sewers as quickly as possible. This has led to problems with our streams, rivers and lakes as well as to the wildlife supported by them. Today we have learned that one of the most effective ways to protect our fresh water resource is to keep the water on site and allow it to percolate into the naturally purifying earth. This prevents storm water runoff, overloading of our sewer systems and recharges the water table. Educating the public is vitally important to make sure that this shift in thinking is understood and embraced. Canada is blessed with an abundance of fresh water and as such all Canadians should be leaders in fresh water management. Often individuals will hear of the benefits of LID landscapes but cannot visualize something that is functional as well as beautiful.
