An exclusive peek at Canada Blooms the Toronto Flower & Garden Festival
March 12 – 16, 2008

In the creative hands of students from the Landscape Design certificate program at Ryerson University’s Chang School of Continuing Studies, snowboards, computer keyboards and other recycled, found and organic materials will be transformed into whimsical and functional bird houses at the Scotts’ Wild Bird Habitat on the 800 Level. In collaboration with Ryerson Architectural Science students, Yonge Street Mission youth and under the direction of Professor Margery Winkler, Dr. Sadgehpour and Instructor Shawn Gallaugher, students will put on this spectacular display, which will find a permanent home after the show at the Scotts Wild Bird Trail in Mississauga’s Riverwood Nature Park.

Freeman Herbs is bringing pots of fresh herbs to Marketplace. Stop by Booth 900 to sample herb-infused dips, such as this herb-flavoured oil recipe: In a saucepan, add ¼ cup washed and dried fresh oregano, basil and thyme and a sprig of rosemary to 2 cups of warmed, extra virgin olive oil. Add 2 tbsp black peppercorns and 2 tbsp crushed, dried, red pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat, strain through cheesecloth into a sterilized glass jar. Store in fridge up to one week.

Want to add interest to your garden in winter? Lake Simcoe South Master Gardener Judith Rogers recommends growing trees with colourful bark and adding obelisks, which look lovely capped and covered in snow. Reflections from gazing balls and mirrors light up dreary winter days too, and twinkle lights add a magical glow to the snow-blanketed night garden. Be sure to visit the Master Gardeners’ Ask the Experts booth on the 700 Level for solutions to your gardening dilemmas.

Wednesday, March 12 is Garden Travel Day at the Canada Blooms Speaker Series. Be transported to the lush gardens of the Emerald Isle by well-traveled gardener Frank Kershaw who will take you on a slide-show tour of 35 public and private gardens in southern Ireland. And while you’re at the show, be sure to cast your vote for best garden in the Peoples Choice Awards, presented by Tourism Ireland – you could win a trip for two to Ireland!
