Bringing Back The Birds

About Colleen Cirillo

Colleen Cirillo has spent many years in the world of nature interpretation, protection and restoration, including over a decade at Toronto and Region Conservation and 2.5 years at Ontario Nature. In October 2015, she took over as director of education at the Toronto Botanical Garden. She is also a volunteer board member of LEAF, and a committee chairperson for the Ontario Invasive Plant Council.

Colleen is an avid native plant gardener who has maxed out her tiny downtown yard and bullied her way into neighbours' yards. She has a special place in her heart for native shrubs such as serviceberry and chokeberry, which provide nourishment for bugs, birds and people. Colleen’s children accuse her of preferring her plants to them. This is difficult to deny.

Baby songbirds consume high-protein insects almost exclusively, diversifying their diets later on. In fact, research shows that it takes 2,000 juicy caterpillars to support a baby chickadee for the two to three weeks between hatching and fledging. So if you want to enjoy the sights and sounds of birds, you have to welcome caterpillars and other insects into your garden. The best way to do this is to incorporate native plants. These are the plants that have been here for millennia, and have evolved along with other native species in the presence of native soils and climates. Discover the beautiful world of native plants, the fascinating connections between insects, birds and plants, and the simple actions you can take to support birds through all seasons and life stages.
